54th Annual Member's Exhibition Piece

"Pulse" is my latest mixed media piece is composed with 97 Pysanky eggs. This unique mandala makes its debut in the upcoming Art Guild of Pacifica's 54th Annual Member's Exhibition at the Sanchez Art Center.

"Pulse",  Mixed Media, 24" x 18" plus frame

"Pulse" is a meditation of darkness and life that I created as my niece struggled with addiction and recovery. I felt connected with Rothko's dark, meditative pieces, particularly the Rothko Chapel paintings. I visualized  Morton Feldman's Music for the Rothko Chapel to be played while viewing "Pulse". May we have the strength to choose life and keep the pulse.

Currently Showing at The Oceana Art Gallery

"Into Machu Picchu" is a 24 x 36" oil painting on canvas that evolved slowly over a couple years, as I captured the spirit I felt encountering few tourists long ago. While doing online research, and seeing how the area has prospered and grown with ecotourism, I realized my painting was finished, as my experience would not be possible now. I included it in the Travelogue Exhibition at the Oceana Art Gallery in Pacifica open through October 20th.

Latest Contemporary Pysanky

Although I was not juried into the 50-50 IV Show, I continue on my exploration with Pysanky eggs. Here are some of my latest experiments.

Acid Wash Egg
I used dark dyes with a wax resist, then bathed the egg in a vinegar solution that allowed the color on the unwaxed areas to be released. It is wiped, then the remaining wax is melted off giving this result. It reminds me of scrimshaw.

Cabbage Patch Egg
This egg was inspired from my magnificent vegetable garden. I forgot to wax over my dark green dye layer, and ended up with an egg a bit different than I envisioned. Sometimes it is hard to remember what the design looks like as the egg gets covered over with more and more black was. I'll do another get closer to my vision.

Constellation Egg
I let the raised calcium dimples on this egg inspire the design, covering the yellow bumps with wax as a first step. The reminded me of a constellation of stars, and the design evolved.

Preparing Art and Breaking Eggs

I'm working out materials and mounting processes with my new medium. This piece was finished until just after photographing it.

An Incarnation

Oops! The glue wasn't dry, so I have to recreate one or 3 of the eggs. A second incarnation of this piece is on its way, hot off the skillet!

An egg in the hand is worth....

Below are three views on one egg. This is the first brown egg I've worked with. The dyes look quite rich, and the egg has more of a matte quality than the white eggs.

Art Update: Pysanky Eggs, ala Donna

Egg Mandala
Bittern Egg
If you have been wondering what has been occupying my creative energies lately, this is it! I was recently introduced to Pysanky, the Ukranian method of "writing" on eggs with a stylus that employs wax to resist color, similar to batik.

traditional division, new addition
I adapt traditional elements and geometric divisions and depart to create each unique design.

Seascape Egg

Hailstorm Egg

I am exploring the egg as a canvas for my visions usually created with oil paint on canvas, as well as what I do in my beadwork.

My first Pysanky: March 10, 2012
It is my intention to keep working on these eggs to see how much can be done with them. I hope to do a series for the Fourth Annual 50/50 show if I am lucky enough to get accepted.
